SF Beer Week 2010: An Insider’s Guide to San Francisco Beer Week

SFBW

If you’re anything like me (for your sake, the less the better), the only thing more compelling than the impressive and diverse offerings of the upcoming San Francisco Beer Week is the absolutely certainty that, no matter what events you ultimately decide to attend, you’re going to be missing out on something great.

Guess what? It’s either your beer-hunting illusions of grandeur or your liver.

There are going to be too many über-talented brewers, homebrewers, chefs, homebrew chefs, ice cream chefs?, chocolatiers, writers, bikers, bloggers, BJCP Grand Masters, Certified Cicerones, and uncertified and emotionally unreliable beer wonks (I had to include myself) in and around the Bay Area in early February for anyone to even hope to keep his or her head on straight.

So what I’ve done is focus on the beer. This is something I do well.

Below you will find what I’ve chosen as some of the major highlight events from each day of SF Beer “Week” (oh, you know you’re in trouble when it’s ten days long…) and assembled as many beer lists and highlights as I could muster in a unreasonable amount of time. If people have more beer lists or specific events that they’d like to see included, please leave a comment for others below and I’ll make an effort to add in additional highlights as we get closer to February 5th.

A couple of things: this is in no way meant to undermine unmentioned events or serve as anything other than encouragement for people to get out and participate in San Francisco Beer Week to the best of their ability: safely, thoughtfully, and with an eye towards quality in the beers they chose to enjoy.

I will be down and around the city for much of the week, presumably in a slightly faded blue baseball cap with a red “C” on the front of it, and (god willing) quite possibly, maybe, a Hop Press t-shirt. So say hello.

One final note before getting down to the nitty-gritty: please reconfirm the times and event details with the SF Beer Week official schedule. I was as careful as I could possibly be, but… well, there was a lot of stuff.

[One final, final note: BEER LISTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. I'm keeping these as accurate as possible, but distribution mixups do happen.]

Man, I am just so flipping excited about Beer Week now!! It’s just the most incredible line-up of events ever. I need to try and get myself around. DIPA, Alesmith and Sourfests are gimmes I’m heading up to Santa Rosa on the Tuesday so will hopefully get Younger from source then – will there be any left?! I want to get Supplication (and any other RR sours).

Looking forward to sharing some beers with you!

Hell of a recap, Ken! I wish I could attend some of these, but it looks like you’ve done an amazing job of distilling the daunting list of special events down to its core (but still daunting) list of singular highlights. I’m sure one of these years I’ll make my way back up to Toro for the B-wine fest at the very least, but now it looks like I’ll have to pad the typical weekend trip with an extra day or two to partake in more of the SF Beer Week stuff as a warm-up. Amazing job by all involved.

Mouth-watering article! My liver is shrieking in anticipation.

Some clarification on the Beer and Nosh Dinner beerlist…The three Drake’s beers listed will not be served individually, but rather as a custom blend called “Barrel Noire.” The blend consists of Imperial Stout aged in Pinot Noir Barrels, Imperial Stout aged in port barrels with blueberries, and a belgian blonde aged in a merlot barrel that previously held the “Brettamber” sour ale.

  4. K. M. Weaver 1 February 2010 at 9:00 am #

    @Jason

Thanks for the clarification! I’ve updated the beer list for the Beer and Nosh event to reflect this.

  5. Bierfesten 1 February 2010 at 3:08 pm #

Great list of events with beers.. those of us not in SF this year are looking on with envy. The Pliny and special beer events make this one of the premier beer weeks around.
