The Hop Press is Now Open to Submissions

For most of these past ten years, Ratebeer Weekly was an important part of Ratebeer’s community of craft beer lovers. Members of the site could submit articles covering events happening in their area, homebrewing experiences, beer-centric travels, wider topical musings… all things beer, in a nutshell.

With the rollout of The Hop Press, attention had to temporarily shift. Josh and his Oakes Weekly column, a long-running part of Ratebeer Weekly, thankfully made the initial transition. And I’m happy to announce that we’re now ready to accept article submissions from Ratebeer users once again. Details below.

This page will serve as the central repository for updated info about submitting articles to The Hop Press. I’ll be adding links throughout the site, including on the “Submit Your Work” tab on the main Ratebeerians page, which will serve as the centralized location for these articles (in addition to them appearing on the front page of Ratebeer and main Hop Press site). I will continue to update this page as the submission process evolves and further streamlines.

What we’re looking for:

  • Insightful, well-crafted writing about craft beer.
  • Articles falling into any the following categories: Beer School, Beer Style, Brewery, Events, Food, Garden, Homebrew, Interview, Literature, Media, Metro, Musings, Pub/Restaurant, Travel, and Vertical. (Note: these are meant more as suggestions than strict limitations.)
  • Articles that include pictures.
  • Articles that expand upon the current coverage of The Hop Press.

What we’re not looking for:

  • Articles that are secretly beer reviews.
  • Articles that are secretly glorified link exchange, featuring links to external, commercial sites.
  • Articles that do not feature original content (i.e., posts that appear on another blog).
  • Articles that significantly overlap existing coverage.
  • Articles less than 500 words (with limited exceptions).
  • Articles that are poorly proofread, poorly researched, or exhibit inappropriate and/or inflammatory language.
  • Articles that cover events in an untimely fashion (within a week is good).

How to Submit Articles:

Ratebeerians interested in submitting articles to The Hop Press will have a WordPress account generated for them, through which they will add text, upload pictures, and submit articles for review. [Updated: 04/18/11] I have stepped down as Managing Editor of The Hop Press, and all future inquiries regarding writing should be directed to our Editor in Chief, Mario Rubio: Mario [at] BrewedforThought [dot] com.

Please include the following in your email: (1) Your First and Last Name, (2) Your Ratebeer Username, and (3) A Current Email Address (to send account login info). Basically, you can then follow the directions in the email you receive to access your new account and get things started.

Questions? Concerns? Man, if only we had a comment function below…

    Does it pay?

I knew I left something important out.

Ratebeer Weekly had never offered any sort of financial compensation, and we’re not in a position right now to compensate non-weekly columnists at the current time. I do hope that changes. Rest assured that, should my own Goggle Adsense earnings to date from my weekly column transfer to my bank account, I might be able to buy a six-pack of craft beer with them. I’m happy to share.

    Raphael,

Thanks for your interest! We’re especially interested in getting folks involved from less-covered beer regions. I’ve sent you an email.
